North London Branch

Support Meetings

The North London Branch holds two separate support meetings:

General support meetings provide an opportunity for people living with MND, their carers, family and friends, to come together in a friendly, informal environment to talk and share experiences.

Carers’ support meetings specifically enable carers of people living with MND to come together in a safe environment to discuss particular concerns and issues surrounding their caring role. Family and friends are also welcome to attend.

Please contact Gay on 020 8363 9010 if you would like to attend.

Report by Gay Watson on the first carers’ support meeting held on Friday 8th July 2011

The first North London Branch carers’ support meeting took place on Friday 8th July. There were six carers (past and present) who came along and we were joined by Lorraine Carter, Regional Care Development Adviser, and Margaret Gallagher, Care Services Adviser.

Following the format of the general support meetings that the Branch holds, there was no set agenda, although specific items are brought up during the course of conversation. We find that this informality works well, and what is of concern to one person is usually of interest to the whole group.

Margaret Gallagher introduced herself and gave a brief synopsis of her role in the organisation, saying that hers is currently a pilot role with the remit of being a first responder to people who contact the Association. She can visit those who would like to see her and is able to put people in touch with the services they need.

If this first get together is anything to go by, the idea of having a group meeting for carers has proved successful and we’ve put a date for the next one in our diaries.
